So what happens when you go to the hospital and then your insurance company refuses to pay?
It's called balance billing, and it means that you (the patient) get the bill. Is it legal? Well, it is sort of a loop hole that medical providers are using to put pressure on insurance companies when they don't follow through with their contractual obligations.
Does this really happen? Yes, sadly it does. There is some movement in state legislatures to prevent this.
